Pediatric dentists are dentistry’s version of the pediatrician. They have additional training beyond dental school in treating infants, children, adolescents, and people with special needs. Some parents choose to bring their child to a pediatric dentist for comprehensive care. Others are referred to a pediatric specialist by their general dentist because the dental needs are extensive, the child is apprehensive, or there are special medical concerns that require a specialist’s care. Pediatric dentists provide services including routine dental check-ups, fillings, extractions, interceptive orthodontics, conscious sedation, and treatment under general anesthesia in a hospital setting.
Children should have their first visit to a dentist shortly after the first tooth comes in, or no later than the first birthday.
Just as you take your child to the pediatrician to prevent disease, the dentist can help you prevent cavities in your child, but they have to see them before they have problems. Early visits to the dentist allow discussion about preventive measures you can take at home to lessen the likelihood of your child having decay. They also allow your child to become accustomed to visiting the dentist with positive experiences from an early age.
